MY HONEST SHREDDY REVIEW

So the Shreddy Challenge is finished and I do still have another week left of the Gym Tone Up Guide however, I wanted to put a little review out of the guide now while its kind of fresh in people’s minds. I’m going to separate it into a few sections so I make sure that I cover everything in the detail that I want as well. So the areas I am going to cover are: food, workouts, community and overall experience.

OVERALL EXPERIENCE

So to start with, my lockdown experience has obviously been shaped by Shreddy. The guide and participating in the challenge has positively effected my mental health so much in this time and I’m honestly not sure if I would have been as dedicated if I’d have gone at it with my own workouts.

One of the main things I loved about following the guide was that it shows your progress along the top and after each workout you get a little bit closer to reaching 100%. I found this so so motivating because my only goal was to complete the guide. I did want to lose weight and that was goal but I didn’t have a weight of a measurement that I really wanted to get down to by the end of the 12 weeks. I think as well the little circle showing how far through you are is so much more motivating because you can see the progress that you’re making in the guide, so even if you didn’t notice physical changes you have that change.

This leads into my next point that the app is extremely easy to use. Like the easiest ever. If you’ve read my fitness journey post (which you should if you haven’t already) you’ll know that I’ve already done/ attempted to do the Grace Fit Guide (GFG) as well as the B_ND ‘Get Shreddy: Home Guide’. So GFG was on the app Aflete, which was fairly easy to use but I definitely think Shreddy is easier in terms of how you track your weights, and that you can pick set days to do your workouts. The B_ND guide was also just a PDF guide, so the only way you saw your progression was moving on a week and through physical and mental progress, as opposed to counting down to an end.

So in the middle page of the app it has ‘content library’ which has workouts, real time workouts and the exercise library in. While I don’t use this page a lot it is one of my preferred features of the app. I like that theres a bank of workouts, this is something I really liked when I was doing the home workouts as well especially for changing up the strength rounds due to equipment. I haven’t used the real time workouts a massive amount to be completely honest, but when Shreddy first released I did do a few of them in my room at uni during revision breaks or if I didn’t quite have enough time to go to the gym. My favourite part is the exercise library though! However, I think thats just because that is what I use when I create Shreddy inspired circuits for instagram posts so its been a really useful for creating content.

FOOD

So I didn’t completely follow the meal guide of Shreddy. However, when it first came out I did and I did find that it worked out quite expensive which is why I didn’t follow it again. That being said, I did do a week of eating Shreddy meals. I was originally going to do a separate post on this but I think it makes more sense to just share my overall thoughts here.

So first of all, and this is completely personal, I found that for me to follow the exact meal plan my calories would be way too high for me based on what I am currently cutting at and the protein would be way way too low. Obviously that is a very personal thing though, some people would be fine cutting at those calories and if you aren’t cutting than obviously they would be fine.

I also found that the recipes are written in a way that maybe simplifies them a little bit too much. Maybe I just like things over explained but sometimes there was too few steps or not enough direction. However, I only really struggled with this on the more complex recipes. For the most part I found the recipes to be simple and they all tasted really good.

It also introduced me to new foods. I never even knew what seitan was before I started Shreddy and now I really like it, I think its really tasty and enjoyable, and is definitely something I want to incorporate more into my diet.

HOME WORKOUTS

So one thing I really like about Shreddy is that even though I am on the Gym guide I’ve been able to incorporate home workouts, its made it far easier, especially when I was doing exams and really busy with uni work. The home workouts are also really effective I found that you are actually working for a most of the workout and have quite short recovery periods so it feels really effective.

During the challenge they also introduced a feature that let you preview the workouts. This was really useful as I could think of alternatives for exercises I didn’t have the equipment for. This update also introduced a noise timer that would let you know when you were coming to the end of an exercise. I do with that they did that with the rest period as well though because it meant I had to be paying proper attention to my phone the during those periods.

GYM WORKOUTS

So I’m sure most of you will know that I have been mostly doing the gym workouts from home using a barbell and dumbbells. The reason I was able to do this is because in gym guides you can change exercises out and I could take a more flexible approach which allowed me to do what I could with the equipment I had.

However, in a few of the videos the form isn’t fully correct, I noticed it most in deadlifts and hip thrusts. So if you are new to lifting I would suggest googling form for exercises that you might be new to. Other than that I really liked it.

COMMUNITY

So I never used the community tab in the app but I have been actively involved in the instagram community and it has allowed me to connect with some of the loveliest people. The community aspect is also something that really helped me stick to the workouts because you would see other girls smashing them and it would motivate me to go and smash mine. Especially during lockdown the community has been so so helpful.

So, I think thats my review done.

Would I recommend Shreddy to a friend?

If they were trying to get into fitness and fairly new to it yes. But if you’re experienced and are happy to plan your own workouts I’d save the £9.99.

After I have finished the 12 weeks I won’t be continuing with Shreddy. I don’t want to repeat the Tone Up guide and the split doesn’t massively align with my goals.

Thanks for reading, I hope this has been useful!!!!
